Lisbon team looked at Athens’ approach to innovation

Lisbon ROCK team has learned more about how to put citizens at the center of innovation and city problem solving

On 21 February, Lisbon ROCK team (Alexandra Aníbal, coordinator of the Lisbon Living Lab and Paulo José Silva, coordinator of the Marvila Library) joined a group of city leaders and practitioners in Athens to learn more about the synAthina program, Athens’ effort to put citizens at the center of innovation and city problem solving.

synAthina is an online platform which allows members of the community to engage in problem-solving and reform. Individual citizens and groups can submit volunteer activities as well as ideas on how to improve the city.

During this day-long convening, Lisbon ROCK team discussed issues related to the culture of participation and got an in-depth overview of synAthina, its impact to date and lessons from implementation as well as reflected about the possibility to weigh up the synAthina methods and tools that may be applicable in the ROCK context. Lisbon team also had an opportunity to share the work in progress in Marvila and to learn from other attending cities who are at the leading edge of citizen engagement.
